So obviously this was supposed to go up on Valentine's Day. However, yesterday, everything got busy between work and class and cuddling... so it's going up today! Hope you still can relish in some love the day AFTER the big V-Day.
Hey, everyone! Happy Valentine's Day! A few days ago, on my Facebook page, I posted a Talkback
question asking people to give me their favorite Broadway songs about love.
The responses come from a combination of people in Arizona and friends at Kenyon College. I've denoted the Kenyon friends with a *. In addition, a lot of people commented songs and didn't get a why. So I included those on the Spotify playlist, but just not in the actual write up :)
Also, PSA: if you're interested in being involved in Pool Dreamcasting and you aren't already, shoot me an FB message. Sending out the next one tomorrow and I'd love to include more people. :)
Also, enjoy the Spotify playlist I made of these songs at the bottom of the post!
"Probably "Without Love" from
Hairspray. It's a great feel good song and shows just how incomplete your life is without your other half." - Danny Blankemeier
"'I Turned The Corner' (that medley type deal) from
Thoroughly Modern Millie; 'Next Ten Minutes' from
The Last Five Years; 'Falling Slowly' from
Once; 'You Matter To Me' from
Waitress. I love those ones because these love songs aren't saying that love is perfect and that life is perfect- but that they are changed because of the one they love. They are so authentic." - Summer Farnsworth
"'You Matter To Me' from
Waitress. It strikes a personal note for me. It's such a heartfelt declaration of love, despite the character's circumstances." - Bronson Todd
"'I'll Cover You' from
Rent. It's just cute as hell." - Brandon Reyes
"'Being Alive' from
Company. Because it is a response to the intrinsic insecurity of the human reality of being alone in the world, acknowledging the frightening and confusing yet ultimately rewarding decision to share ones life with another. This 'sharing despite not knowing' is a key indicator of love for me." - Hank Woods
"'Time Stops' from
Big Fish because c'mon; he was so in love with her he worked for free in a circus for three years just to know her name...that's commitment." - Miranda Smith
"'I'll Cover You' from
Rent. It's a beautiful song about always being there through thick and thin. These two men accepted each other as is and they're love is so pure." - Kat Robinson
"Just listen to
The Last Five Years on repeat." - Jono Bornstein*
"I know it's old, but 'All I Ask of You' from
Phantom of the Opera is such a classic. It is my favorite about love because it is about pledging commitment, which echoes how powerful true love is at consuming the entire present and futures of two lovers." - Jaclyn Stack
"'When Words Fail' from
Shrek because it's so truthful about love. Confessing your feelings is one of the hardest things in the world but even when you can't get the right words out knowing that the person you care about won't judge you makes it just a little bit easier. Love is all about accepting, especially when the other screws up at times." - Kim Klorman
"'There's a Fine Fine Line' from
Avenue Q is my personal favorite because it really punches you in gut with truth about feelings. As far as more feel good songs, 'Something That Will Last' and 'The One' from
First Date are funny and kinda heart happy in a good way." - Bryce Dilullo
"'Love Changes Everything' from
Aspects of Love. It tugs at the heart. I like the rhythm. And it's totally true. It changes things." - Kristin Bowler
"'Only Us' -
Dear Evan Hansen, 'Suddenly Seymour' -
Little Shop of Horrors, 'You Matter to Me' -
Waitress. I love Only Us because it's a huge intro to their first loves. Evan is so socially awkward he's never really experienced love, so when he finds Zoe, it's so real. Same with Suddenly Seymour. Seymour never knew anybody or anything besides himself and his plants. So when he meets Audrey, it's just like woah. You Matter to Me, because it's a song of two thoroughly abused people falling in love for what they bare and what they have. It's beautiful." - Bailey Gorman
"'What About Love' -
The Color Purple. It's a song about discovering a new part of yourself. Finding new feelings about someone is kind of like staring of the edge of a cliff. It's scary but also invigorating." - Mark Munoz
"'I Should Tell You' from
Rent. It's about two people who are scared to love, for two very different reasons. It's basically them acknowledging that it's scary and a risk to be in love and to try be anything to each other, but they're willing to try it anyway." - Jackie Brecker
"Either 'The Next Ten Minutes' from The Last Five Years, just because it's so brilliantly composed and the only point in that musical where the main characters are in sync with one another, or 'Sunrise' from In the Heights, because there's some really cool Spanish and English back and forth that makes the song a real gem for me." - Paola Liendo*
"'The Word of your Body' from
Spring Awakening because it's about blossoming love emotionally and physically it shows growth in a relationship and that's why I love it." - Ali Giordano
"I suppose 'With You' from
Ghost is about grief but man oh man you can FEEL the love." - Amelia Yeager*
"Okay but 'Live Before We Die' from
Addams Family. I love and adore this song because it's right when Morticia is about to leave Gomez due to his lying but it's Gomez's final attempt to get his wife back. It expresses their love they have and have always had for each other. It's such an amazing song about love, forgiveness, and how to not let the little things get in the way of on amazing relationship." - Sarah Davidson
"'Legally Blonde' from
Legally Blonde because it just kind of shows him being there all along for her. Also, 'Bare' from
Bare: A Pop Opera because while they can't be together anymore, Jason finally says he loves Peter when throughout the whole show Peter is the only one who says it to Jason and I just relate a lot to the one-sidedness of it all and to finally have that truthful declaration without fear of judgment is beautiful." - CJ Witmer
"'Small Umbrella in the Rain' from
Little Women. It really feels like the conclusion to everything both of them have gone through in the show and it's altogether super cute how nervous Professor Bhaer is the entire time. Plus it has a lot of personal meaning for me from my high school's production of
Little Women and it's a moment I'll never forget." - Charlie Gnagy*
"I have never really liked Broadway songs too much but I have a very soft spot for "Falling Slowly" from
Once." - Sarah Sklar*
"'Some Things Are Meant To Be' is so important. Also I really love "Why Stay?/A Promise" from
next to normal because it puts so much emphasis on loving people even when they feel broken past the point where they're worth loving oh no i'm crying." - Annmarie Morrison*
"'The Next Ten Minutes' from
The Last Five Years because it's when Jamie and Cathy are at the highest point in their relationship. It's composed so beautifully that it makes you feel the love they are feeling." - Jesse Pike
"'Do You Love Me' from
Fiddler on the Roof––all time classic love song." - Roger Edmonds
"'As Long As You're Mine' from
Wicked because it shows their unconditional love for each other no matter what their obstacles are. And "If I Loved You" from
Carousel because it shows the playfulness in both the characters, and shows how stubborn and perfect they are for each other, which makes his death so tragic." - Savoy Graca
"My favorite romantic solo is 'Maria' from
West Side Story. I can't think of a more passionate song sung by a man for a woman. Even if you take away the lyrics, you still have the sheer poetry of the music. Gives me chills every time I hear it." - Linda Pauley
"'Last Night on Earth' from
American Idiot. Because if you're gonna shoot up drugs, might as well do it with your loved ones! But actually, the lyrics are romantic!" - Paige Gagliardi
"'One Hand, One Heart' from
West Side Story. I think it represents everything that love should be. You become one. You find your other half. Also, I'm a sucker for
West Side Story." - Jessie Jo Pauley
"I've got to go with 'I Don't Need a Roof' from
Big Fish. It just perfectly sums up the idea that, even through hardship and pain, love is the only thing that a person needs in order to be happy. Plus, in a show full of emotional songs about love and family, this one easily stands out as one of the best." - Noah Delgado
"'You'll Be in My Heart' from
Tarzan is and always will be one of my favorite songs ass well. The lyrics are just so extremely powerful- talking about how you will always love someone, even if others might not love you for who you are." - Kaleigh Feuerstein
